Cool Technologies You Probably Haven’t Heard Of (Part 1)

Wednesday, April 2, 2008 @ 12:02 am

Adobe’s 3D Camera Lens -
Adobe has developed a camera lens that is modeled after a compound eye, which is capable of capturing comprehensive depth information. Among other things that I’m sure no one has even thought of yet, this allows for a photographer to adjust depth of focus and even the angle of the shot after the photo has been taken. The original post (in French) and video (in English) can be found here.

Celemony’s “Direct Note Access” -
From the people who brought you the popular pitch correction software Melodyne, comes something that shouldn’t even be possible. The ability to reach into a complicated polyphonic audio recording and not only clearly see the individual notes that comprise it, along with their lengths, but edit them independently.

I do notice that their example source material is comprised predominately of instruments whose timbre includes well-defined attack transients, so that could easily be a requirement for the technology to work well. Even so, there’s a lot of potential here. Here’s to hoping it isn’t snake oil.

Seadragon and Photosynth

This is easily one of the most amazing technologies I’ve ever seen. I encourage you to watch the video, and then check it out for yourself.

NOTE: I had to use Internet Explorer, so much as trying to load the page would crash Firefox 3b4. Probably because I installed the Silverlight plugin, like a fool.
